He's Seen the Zoomies Come and Go
Duke has held the unofficial title of Old Soul since well before anyone can remember him earning it, mostly because it was never earned so much as radiated. He carries himself with the weary authority of a dog who has watched several generations of puppies make the exact same mistakes and declined, every time, to intervene.
His job, as he understands it, is supervision, which he defines loosely as "being present while things happen near him." He does not participate in games. He does not chase balls. He does not, under any circumstances, do zoomies, a phenomenon he regards the way a retired judge might regard a food fight — with distant, faintly amused disapproval.
Visitors sometimes mistake Duke's expression for sadness. It is not sadness. It is closer to the look of a man reviewing a spreadsheet he already knows is wrong. He has opinions about the yard's layout, the pack's decision-making, and the general state of things, and he communicates all of them through a single, well-practiced sigh.
Despite the gruff exterior, Duke has a soft spot he guards carefully: he will, without fail, settle in beside any visitor who seems like they need quiet company more than an active dog. He may not participate. He will, however, sit with you, and somehow that ends up being exactly enough.

A Day in the Life
| 7:30 AM | Rises with the weary dignity of a dog who has done this before |
| 9:00 AM | Supervises breakfast. Approves of nothing specific. |
| 11:00 AM | Watches the younger dogs play. Declines to join. Judges warmly. |
| 1:00 PM | Sits quietly with whichever visitor looks like they need it most |
| 4:00 PM | Delivers one (1) sigh of institutional memory |
| 7:00 PM | Retires early. He's earned it. He's earned everything. |
What the Rest of the Yard Says
"He didn't say anything. He didn't need to. I felt very supervised."
— A first-time camper
"He's disapproved of everything I've ever done, and somehow I still feel like he's rooting for me."
— Nugget, Zoomies at Dawn
- Has never, not once, done the zoomies. Watches them happen with quiet judgment.
- Regarded by the younger dogs as the closest thing the yard has to institutional memory.
- His approval is rare, quiet, and, when it happens, considered a genuine honor.
