Biography

An Athlete of Extremely Limited Duration

Every morning at 6:00 AM, without an alarm, without a coach, and without anyone asking him to, Nugget wakes up and performs one full lap of the yard at what witnesses describe as "genuinely alarming speed for a dog built like a beanbag chair." Then he returns to bed. That's it. That's the whole event.

Sports scientists — had any been consulted, and none have — would likely note that an eleven-second sprint followed by twenty-three hours and fifty-nine minutes of recovery represents an unconventional training philosophy. Nugget would likely respond to this critique by already being asleep.

He treats the lap with the seriousness of a closing ceremony. There is no warmup. There is no stretching. He simply appears at the back door, surveys the yard like a general reviewing a battlefield, and goes. Family members who have tried to film it report a success rate of roughly one in six, because by the time the camera opens, the lap is already over.

Once the lap is complete, Nugget considers his professional obligations for the day fully discharged and spends the remainder of it recovering from an effort that, by any objective measure, lasted less time than it takes to boil an egg.
